CASA Advocate Volunteer of Travis County since 2005
Imagine the experience of children who are removed from their homes because the people responsible for protecting them have not. These children find themselves in a world filled with social workers, lawyers, judges and courtrooms where life-altering decisions are made on their behalf.
A CASA volunteer is a court appointed, trained and committed adult who ensures that each child’s individual needs remain a priority in an over-burdened child welfare system. They get to know the child while also gathering information from the child’s family, teachers, doctors, care-givers and anyone else involved in the child’s life in order to make independent and informed recommendations to help the judge decide what’s best for the child. CASA volunteers come from every walk of life and share a commitment to improving children’s lives, a willingness to learn, and an open mind towards life experiences different from their own.
For children who’ve been abused or neglected, CASA means having a home instead of feeling lost, and being a priority instead of feeling invisible. For volunteers, CASA is a life-changing experience that makes our community a better place.
You do not need any special kind of education, experience or background to serve as a CASA volunteer. CASA will provide you with all the training and support you will need to serve as an effective advocate. CASA training consists of 10 3-hour classes plus 3 hours of courtroom observation. After completing the first class, “CASA 101: What it means to be a CASA volunteer,” you may take the remaining 9 classes in any order according to your schedule.
You must complete all training before you will be assigned to a child. Classes are offered at a variety of times and days to suit anyone’s schedule. If you are looking for a meaningful and enriching volunteer opportunity in the Austin area and want to do something about child abuse, CASA is right for you.
Consider becoming a CASA Volunteer! http://www.casatravis.org/
Dave Laird Visual Effects Artist at charlieuniformtango Cheryl Albanese helped me to find my dream home! And it wasn't easy as I had some rather specific attributes I was looking for in a home. Yeah, we all say things like that but my house needed to be located next to a runway! Cheryl was always professional, thoughtful, and worked diligently to help me find and negotiate the purchase of the home. I will not hesitate to use her again in any real estate transaction in the future. March 14, 2015, Dave was Cheryl's client
Louis Taylor Evolution Fresh Retail Solutions Representative II at Starbucks Cheryl is one those people you look forward to working with again! She exceeded all expectations I had of a realtor. I found the home I loved on my second visit but to help me she showed me other houses to help me decide if it was the one. During the option period she worked nights and weekends to help coordinate inspectors and repair estimates. I will recommend Cheryl to all of my friends and colleagues. Wes Marshall Independent Wine and Spirits Professional Until I met Cheryl, I was always under the assumption that real estate agents made some of the easiest money on earth. I was completely wrong. From the moment we first met her, she worked tenaciously, first to get our listing, then to sell it. She listened to our needs and helped us price our home accordingly. Given the price range for our home, we thought we'd be looking at a 6 month+ sales process. Instead, she put so much effort into the opening salvo that she had it sold within a couple of weeks of us signing the listing agreement. Given the complex marketing plan, which included films, brochures, advertisements and much else, she actually had the house sold before it was really fully on the market. Every time someone needed to see the house, be it for a showing, an inspector, appraiser, or surveyor, she was there to manage the process. She held our hand though the worrisome process between accepting the offer and closing. then, like a true professional, she took us out to lunch afterwards just to see if she could have done anything better. She couldn't have improved on a thing. I would recommend a family member to use Cheryl. I would send my best friend to her. And I recommend her to you. November 3, 2014, Wes was Cheryl's client
